The Ideal Candidate for All-on-X
All-on-X is a tooth replacement treatment that replaces full arches of missing teeth. This restoration provides patients the stability and functionality to restore their smile. However, not everyone is an ideal candidate for this treatment. Understanding who benefits most from all-on-X can help you make an informed decision about your oral health.
Understanding all-on-X implants
All-on-X is a technique where a full arch of prosthetic teeth is anchored to a set number of implants —typically four to six—strategically placed in the jawbone. Unlike traditional tooth replacement options like dentures, this technique offers a fixed, durable solution that mimics the natural look and feel of the patient's teeth. It is particularly effective for individuals experiencing extensive tooth loss or severe periodontal disease.
This procedure is often recommended due to its ability to restore oral function and confidence. Dental implants can also prevent bone loss, as the posts stimulate the jawbone in a way that is similar to natural roots. However, several factors can affect the success of all-on-X, including the patient's bone density, oral health, and general health.
Ideal candidates for all-on-X implants
While there are several benefits to all-on-X, not every patient fits the criteria for this treatment. Here are some important guidelines to consider before scheduling a consultation.
Missing most or all teeth
People with eight or fewer teeth often have difficulty eating meat, fruits, or vegetables and maintaining a healthy diet. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 26% of adults ages 65 and up have eight or fewer teeth. Another 15% of adults 65 and older—more than 1 in 7—have lost all their teeth. Fortunately, patients with multiple missing or severely damaged teeth often benefit from all-on-X. This restoration eliminates the need for individual implants or removable dentures, providing a comprehensive restoration in a single procedure.
Adequate bone density
Having enough jawbone density is essential for successful implant placement. All-on-X implants rely on a stable foundation to support everyday chewing and biting forces. Patients with significant bone loss may require preparatory treatments, such as bone grafting, before qualifying for this procedure.
Healthy gums
Similar to bone density, all-on-X implants rely on healthy gum tissue for long-term implant success. The dental professional will assess the patient's gum health to ensure they have no active infections or underlying issues that could compromise the implants. Patients with periodontal (gum) disease will likely need to undergo treatment before undergoing all-on-X.
Practices good oral hygiene
Long-term success with all-on-X implants requires excellent oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. Candidates who commit to maintaining their oral health are more likely to achieve better treatment outcomes than those who do. Additionally, ideal candidates are non-smokers or are committed to quitting smoking leading up to the surgery and throughout the healing process.
Good overall health
Certain medical conditions, such as unmedicated Type 1 diabetes or autoimmune disorders(e.g., rheumatoid arthritis or lupus), can affect the healing process and the success of dental implants. However, having an autoimmune disease does not mean that the patient is automatically disqualified from getting all-on-X implants. Patients must mention the condition in their medical history during the initial consultation to determine if they are suitable candidates for the treatment.
Schedule a consultation
